As 2020 comes to a close, there is much to reflect on. What have you gained or lost in 2020? In a year unlike any other, we shared a global experience. It’s incredible how the world has been effected by a microorganism, a virus. Our global connection has become very personal. The spread of the COVID-19 virus, resulting in a pandemic, is an example of how closely connected we truely are. There’s a concept within yoga philosophy called the collective consciousness. It can be thought of as an electro-magnetic field where each energy is part of the whole. Everything in the manifest world consists of energy. This energy is often talked about as consciousness, individual consciousness and collective consciousness. Throughout 2020 each individual was effected in some way by the same virus. It became a felt collective experience.
When we think about what we have gained or lost this past year, what comes up for you? Have you lost a job, security, friendships, mutual respect, routine, or even a loved one? What has been gained this past year? I would say that you have gained quite a bit through this collective experience. You have gained the ability to adapt to a changing environment, the strength to endure hardship, non-violent action toward injustice, increased empathy for those who are sick, increased patience through home schooling, tolerance with learning online services (hello Zoom) and the list goes on. Throughout such a long drawn out period of ups and downs life’s journey has asked us to go deeper. 2020 has become a year that will be remembered and recalled forever. What we have found is the inner fortitude that was there all along. Happy New Year. Bring on 2021.
